Pork Academy: Weather, Economics, and Handling PR

Health, economics, and public relations were key topics from the 2012 Pork Academy.
2012 World Pork Expo and Pork Academy

The 2012 World Pork Expo brought nearly 20,000 pork producers and industry leaders from 38 countries to Des Moines, Iowa, for the world's largest pork-specific trade show. For the producer, some of the highlights included the trade show floor with about 500 exhibitors, the Pork Academy, and the updates on the industry by the National Pork Producers Council.

For the consumer there were many opportunities to learn about pigs, farmers, and food. Of note was the attempt to create the World's Largest Pork Burger (denied but still enjoyed).

Many of the Pork Academy presentations are available on Noted presentations: Dr. Elwynn Taylor, Climatologist, Ag Meteorologist, Iowa State University, provided a very detailed assessment of the weather and impacts on the agriculture industry [video]; Dr. Steve Meyers, Paragon Economics, shares the Economic Grain Situation and Outlook [video]; and Lynn Becker, Pork Producer offers a very personal view on handling a media crisis in Doing what’s right vs. looking for the camera [video].
