Predicting the Future For Your Farm

Agriculture is all about predicting the future and making decisions. What is available to help?

What are your tools for making predictions and making plans for the future? There are many approaches and many resources. And yet there is no surefire way to really predict 100%. What can you do? First off is to listen to those that are following some of the detail. For example Dr. Steve Meyer shares his thoughts on grains and livestock [video]. Or there is Dr. Elwynn Taylor's talk on the weather [video].

Other approaches are to not so much to predict the future but to put in place processes to adjust and roll with the changes the future brings. Scenario planning is one approach. Business continuity planning is another. Lastly, financial planning is a tool to help put some structure around your people and businesses to reduce risk.

"The difference between risk and uncertainty is that risk has numbers." - Dr. Elwynn Taylor

"The future is already here - it's just not very evenly distributed." - William Gibson

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it." - Alan Kay

For perspective, Freakonomics re-published their episode The Folly of Prediction, which looks at the process, art, science, and magic of making predictions [audio][transcript].
