Can Data Be Turned Into Decissions?

Too much data, not enough decisions. What tools or resources can help?

In many sectors of agriculture and food there are bits and pieces of data that are being pulled together. Some of these data sources are o help people better understand how water is used (Making Water Understandable in California ) or helping consumers discover who is involved in creating products in the grocery (Only 10 Corporations Control Almost Everything You Buy ).

Some other data sources for agriculture include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' FAOSTAT page and The World Bank data page.

Some data and visualization initiatives are just getting started. The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition made a large announcement in October 2013, with key partners in the USA and the United Kingdom, including both government agencies and various technology partners.

The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative seeks to support global efforts to make agricultural and nutritionally relevant data available, accessible, and usable for unrestricted use worldwide.

What is not clear is how much of the base data is able to be organized into something usable at the farm/ranch level. While there are now more mobile apps, few are pulling integrated data on a large scale to offer actionable utility.
