Human and animal health experts came together in Atlanta, GA to discuss issues related to antibiotic resistance and to work toward increased antibiotic stewardship, in both human medicine and animal health. Throughout the dialogue, attention was focused on specific areas which can be measured in order to verify the progress made in reducing antimicrobial resistance.

Consumers pay attention when they hear "antibiotic resistance". Images of killer bacteria and the real possibility that medicines will stop working are on their mind. What are some of the policy and science conversations occurring across the world on antibiotic use?

Consumers are concerned about antibiotic resistance and are demanding action from farmers and ranchers. Physicians worry that antibiotic over use in human health will also be impacted. To help understand the issues, researchers and experts from all aspects of human and animal health came together to continue the dialog and make plans for change around the use of antibiotics.

How are consumers reacting to antibiotics used in food animal agriculture?

Antimicrobials and FoodBacteria at the Gate? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released the 2011 Retail Meat Report and the 2011 Summary Report on Antimicrobials Sold or Distributed for Use in Food-Producing Animals. These documents, the most recent as of February 2013, highlight there are some serious concerns about the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Wired Magazine's Superbug blog is publishing material that many people are seeing this month, shaping consumer views on how agriculture needs to operate.

How are farmers and ranchers participating in these conversations? Farmers and ranchers are aware of the issue and are participating (see 2012 One Health Approach to Antimicrobial Resistance and Use ).
