Victim, Villain, Vindicator: Negative Media Impacting Food and Agriculture

Ms. Janet Riley, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Member Services at North American Meat Institute, provides thoughts on media coverage and conversations and how reporting can be skewed against agriculture.

Janet suggests that reporting by main stream media has been constrained by funding cutbacks over the last 20 years and experienced reporters with a deep understanding of agriculture are no longer around.

Over 140 farmers, ranchers, and agriculture communication people gained insight and inspiration from the keynotes and their peers while in Austin, TX for the Cultivate & Connect conference.

The AgChat Foundation's 2014 Cultivate & Connect conference was held in Austin, TX, August 21 and 22, with over 140 farmers, ranchers, and ag communications professionals attending from the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The resounding theme of the event was to learn more about how digital and social media can assist with cultivating open-minded conversation with consumers while connecting them to agriculture's story.

Agriculture media has a very niche audience, some speculate approximately less than 3 million people in the US. How is the ag media evolving and what are some of the trends being observed?

In Q2 2012 Truffle Media ran a survey focused on people in agriculture media, marketing, public relations, advertising, or communications. The aim was to get a better sense of what people thought about traditional (radio, print, TV) versus digital (web, social, mobile) marketing and PR.

While the analysis and understanding of the data is a work in progress, the aggregated data and aggregated report (both de-identified) are available for use.

Information on animal health, economics, weather, and handling media during a crisis are available via the Pork Checkoff supported presentation series.

The 2012 World Pork Expo brought nearly 20,000 pork producers and industry leaders from 38 countries to Des Moines, Iowa, for the world's largest pork-specific trade show. For the producer, some of the highlights included the trade show floor with about 500 exhibitors, the Pork Academy, and the updates on the industry by the National Pork Producers Council.
