What Approaches to Genetic Technology are Beef Producers Following?

Genomic Technologies in Commercial Cattle Production - Dr. Kent Andersen, Associate Director, Technical Service, Zoetis, from the 2013 NIAA Merging Values and Technology conference, April 15-17, 2013, Louisville, KY, USA.

Dr. Kent Andersen, Associate Director, Technical Service, Zoetis, shares how genetic information is utilized to better understand the value of beef cattle. Dr. Andersen defines Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and how it applies to beef cattle. Genetic technologies can help commercial producers better understand their breeding programs, the value of progeny, and prediction of future value of offspring.

"Increasingly, commercial cow-calf producers are purchasing bulls based on genomic-enhanced and enabled information, which results in more dependable and comprehensive selection. Additionally, targeted (traits and breed type) panels for commercial cow-calf and feedlot producers are becoming more viable." says Dr. Andersen.
