How Aquaculture Research is a Must for U.S. National Security

Problems, Stumbling Blocks and Solutions for U.S. Aquaculture - Mr. Sebastian Belle, Executive Director, Maine Aquaculture Association, from the 2013 NIAA Merging Values and Technology conference, April 15-17, 2013, Louisville, KY, USA.

Sebastian Belle clarifies the position aquaculture produced protein fits with respect to other protein option (chicken, beef, pork, etc). One of the concerns Mr. Belle shares is how the world's resources needed to produce land based protein will be scarce in the next 50 years: land, water, and phosphorus. Only 7.5% of the world's surface area is being utilized to feed the world. This limited approach to food production will not stand up to the going population's needs.

“The world is in transition from an era of food abundance to one of scarcity” Lester Brown 2012

Mr. Belle suggests that research into aquaculture based food is a must if the U.S. is to survive the coming crisis in traditional approaches to food production.
