The Story of Cap and Trade

December 30, 2009 - 1:53am
The Story of Cap and Trade - The Story of Cap & Trade is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about cap and trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you.

Corporate agribusiness helps scuttle climate justice

December 30, 2009 - 12:46am
Corporate agribusiness helps scuttle climate justice - As the old saying goes, with crisis comes opportunity, and that certainly was the mentality of the corporate lobbyists that descended in droves on the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. In fact, the largest nongovernmental organization there was the International Emissions Trading Association, a front group representing 170 companies and hosting 66 events. Sadly, many government officials and even some nonprofit groups have fallen for this sleight of hand, mistaking an old-style protection racket for newfound corporate responsibility.

Grand Valley farmers could be hurt by federal food-safety bill

December 30, 2009 - 12:45am
Imagine a summer in the Grand Valley with no succulent honeydews, yellow Juan Canaries or juicy green watermelons from the fields of Green River, Utah. It could happen if a food safety bill working its way through Congress is not changed.

Rich countries carry out '21st century land grab' - HISTORY may be repeating itself. Until the mid-20th century, many European countries grew rich on the resources of their colonies. Now, countries including China, Kuwait and Sweden are snapping up vast tracts of agricultural land in poorer nations, especially in Africa, to grow biofuels and food for themselves.

Copenhagen Climate Caper - I was part of the group of climate realists from CFACT who pulled off an international climate caper against Greenpeace yesterday. We spent the morning boarding the Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise and hung a banner that read “Ship of Lies.” There was no confrontation on the boat as we distracted the staff on deck with donuts.

Electronic files that were stolen from a prominent climate research center and made public last week provide a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes battle to shape the public perception of global warming.
