Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) was founded in 2006 as a market-based solution to growing consumer interest in how farm animals are raised and desire to know where their food is coming from and how it is produced. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), a non-profit charitable organization with a long history of reducing the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by people, made the decision that it needed to create a separate division dedicated solely to certifying and promoting family farms that raise their animals with the highest welfare standards, and AWA was born.

OLC provides a number of member benefits, including regular communication about key issues affecting Ohio's livestock industry through publications and e-mail alerts, and a "members-only" section of OhioLivestock.org that provides fact sheets and issue briefing papers exclusively for OLC members. When particularly difficult local issues arise, OLC also provides financial and legal support to members through its Family Farm Support Fund, to ensure the continuity of Ohio's family farms.
