Media and web 2.0 technology in animal research

Quick note on Real-time disease surveillance tools for the swine industry in Minnesota: One of the authors of this paper, Dr. Peter Davies, presented, along with Dr. Enrique Mondaca, at the Boehringer-Ingelheim Swine Health Conference held Dec 7th in Chicago, IL. They showed a series of tools used to capture and visualize PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus) status within a region. Some of the interesting researched included the use of social network theory and analysis on the monitoring and spread of animal diseases.

The presentation showed the use of Google maps, ArcGIS, UCINET, and NetDraw to capture and show the data in a usable form.
