SwineCast update for April 30, 2009, H1N1 -Swine flu - What You Need To Know And Do

Update for April 30, 2009

To paraphrase Steve Meyer’s comments from part of the Chicago Merc Exchange Daily Livestock report:

”... the virus (more on a name later) has probably snuffed out a cash rally for the short term…. Virtually all media are still using “swine influenza” or “swine flu” to describe the virus, ignoring the alternative names offered by OIE, the world animal health organization and the US Department of Homeland Security. Since it has yet to be found in pigs, we will not contribute to the hysteria — we will use H1N1 to describe the virus.”

Livestock producers saw doors shut on exports around the world this week as our customers either joined in the uncertainty of the virus source, or saw an opportunity to impose a non-tariff barrier to North American production. We’ll know the true cost in the next few months, but this external factor will be the nail in the coffin for some producers who have already skirted the economic edge in the U.S.

SwineCast carried the true story on this program provided to NPPC members for distribution.

Also, we continue this week with additional information from the 2009 NIAA Changing Face of Animal Agriculture conference: Jerry Roell shares thoughts on equipping animal agriculture in a changing world and Bill Medley talks about how wall street is impacting credit to farmers.

We hope that you enjoy and benefit from these great resources! Please feel free to share these presentations with your colleagues and co-workers..

"Unfortunately, we are at a time not only in the meat industry but also in the general U.S. and world economy when what little anyone had to make a forecast for the future has largely disappeared into an opaque soup of uncertainty. There is little doubt that demand for meat, both in the United States and worldwide, is tied to among other things, per-capita income and a behavioral variable related to perceived and actual wealth (although there is some controvery about the wealth effect). Both are down with rising unemployment and plummeting asset values." Read more.
