Update for March 19th, 2009

Legislation introduced in Congress could be detrimental to the health and well-being of pigs, increase pork producers’ production costs and the price consumers pay for pork, plus jeopardize public health. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Louise Slaughter, Democrat from New York, would ban the use of animal health products that prevent or control diseases in livestock.

The potential for passage is still to be assessed. Programs on this issue and a related concern, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), are either recently posted or about to be on SwineCast.com.
