A couple of interesting stories which impact our industry in direct ways are available for your listening. Glynn Tonsor, K-State, reviews data looking at media stories which show our industry in a negative light and how our consumers react at the meat case. The effort to quantify what has been in question will also provide an economic case for developing programs and procedures to further limit inappropriate activities.

We also look at the stimulus package as it affects small business. The Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation will provide some guidance. You may want to check out that offering to insure you're not leaving money on the taxman's table this year.

When Jerry Seinfeld and friends used Tryptophan (delivered in a late turkey dinner) to get at primo “G.I. Joe” action figures… little did we know the outcome would be good news for swine producers.

Researchers are finding the nap-inducing amino acid slows down the aggressive tendencies of re-mixed pigs and gilt replacements. Think of it as Thanksgiving afternoon without the Cowboys and Lions.

Also, a heads up on content from the Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholders Summit. We’ve got the presentations in the bag and will begin posting in coming days. A really great program this year which Truffle Media was proud to support as a sponsor. Interesting side note, a ‘Twitterific’ program as well. Arizona, Here We Come...NOT! Friday, April 23, 2010 was a day that will be remembered by many. On this day, Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed into law bill SB 1070 – “Immigration; Law Enforcement; Safe Neighborhoods”. The controversial law, which goes into effect sometime this summer, will allow (amongst other things) law enforcement officers to stop any person with reasonable suspicion of being illegal and ask about their immigration status. If the person cannot produce documentation that would validate their legal status, they would be arrested.

While doing early morning chores it is evident that unseasonably cool weather has wrapped around much of the country. Even though warmer temperatures are forecasted for next week, the next few days may offer potential for frosting. For cattle on pasture it is important to keep in mind how frost and killing frost (typically four or more hours at 28 degrees or cooler) can impact the forage supply. Take some time today to ensure that you and your cattle are properly prepared for such an event should it occur.

On the one hand…

Conversations with Washington watchers the past week during the climate legislation reinforced the willingness of coastal regions to sock it to the midwest when possible, ala’ coal burning regions to feel the heat of the energy cap and trade legislation. As an energy intensive industry, we’ll pay more than we get.

On the other hand…

Hard work by Ag Committee Dems helped contain the damage and ensured the USDA will manage much of agriculture’s involvement.

Having said that, what comes out on the other side of the Senate’s version and following conference committee work will surely look different if we see it at all. Current conventional wisdom says, "Not likely."

It’s a challenging time as my brother and I were discussing this week. I’m sure your family is having the same conversation.

In what may be an issue of the age for agriculture (as heavy users of petroleum based inputs) there are serious concerns with the ongoing discussion on the climate bill. The NPPC said on Thursday “With U.S. pork producers suffering record losses, the National Pork Producers Council cannot support climate change legislation even with the compromise language agreed to late Wednesday. Many pork producers now are at risk of being put out of business, and passage of this climate change bill would only make that risk greater and put more producers in jeopardy.”

“While the compromise language would allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture rather than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to design and implement the agricultural greenhouse gas offset credits program and to develop any climate change regulations affecting livestock producers – a provision supported by NPPC – the organization doesn’t believe that revenues from the sale of offset credits for the majority of pork producers would counterbalance the energy and input cost increases associated with bill.”

This past weekend my eyes were once again opened to the potential and bright future ahead for agriculture. For two days I served on the nominating committee for our next state FFA officer team. During the time I was able to see the passion and excitement that numerous high school graduates have for our industry. I was extremely impressed with their dedication, commitment and leadership ability.

While the challenges we face continue to grow, it is great to see so many young leaders actively engaged on our side of the battle. Several of them were involved in one way or another with dairy production. I believe any efforts we can take to recruit and develop young people to be active leaders in our industry will be magnified significantly.
