The Year of Pigs is going strong at the Indiana State Fair. Mike Platt, Executive Director of the Indiana Pork Producers Association, shares how innovative product promotion efforts are paying off in Indiana.

There is not much time left this year for the US Congress to pass estate tax legislation. 2010 had the estate tax completely repealed - But that repeal is temporary. If Congress fails to act before January 1, 2011, then estate taxes will be reinstated and at a level we have not seen for 10 years. Pat Wolff, American Farm Bureau Federation Tax Policy Specialist, advocates everyone to connect with their Representatives and Senators. Inaction will result in serious tax implications in 2011.

SwineCast update for July 8, 2010, How Can You Improve Your Individual Pig Care Management Skills?

It's frustrating to see the administration hoist the export flag, setting the goal of doubling U.S. exports in five years (which has never happened before) while congress sits on their respective... hands when it comes to critical free trade agreements ready to sign.

A National Pork Producers Council release noted, "Just this week, an ad hoc coalition of agricultural and food organizations urged members of Congress to work with the Obama administration to remove any remaining impediments to a 'rapid implementation' of the free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

The 42 groups that signed on to the letter pointed out that other countries are moving forward with FTAs with Colombia, Panama and South Korea to the detriment of the United States. Canada and Colombia, for example, recently approved a trade deal that gives duty-free access to a host of Canadian products going into the South American nation."

NPPC Past President Don Butler recently discussed the free trade agreement issues with me. In addition, Iowa State's Dermot Hayes provides the detail on the industry potential when these free trade agreements are in place.

Maybe the delay speaks to political interest in talking about creating jobs versus really creating jobs.

BTW - a very nice comment from a young producer this week on our conversation with Don Tyler.

When Jerry Seinfeld and friends used Tryptophan (delivered in a late turkey dinner) to get at primo “G.I. Joe” action figures… little did we know the outcome would be good news for swine producers.

Researchers are finding the nap-inducing amino acid slows down the aggressive tendencies of re-mixed pigs and gilt replacements. Think of it as Thanksgiving afternoon without the Cowboys and Lions.

Also, a heads up on content from the Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholders Summit. We’ve got the presentations in the bag and will begin posting in coming days. A really great program this year which Truffle Media was proud to support as a sponsor. Interesting side note, a ‘Twitterific’ program as well. Arizona, Here We Come...NOT! Friday, April 23, 2010 was a day that will be remembered by many. On this day, Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed into law bill SB 1070 – “Immigration; Law Enforcement; Safe Neighborhoods”. The controversial law, which goes into effect sometime this summer, will allow (amongst other things) law enforcement officers to stop any person with reasonable suspicion of being illegal and ask about their immigration status. If the person cannot produce documentation that would validate their legal status, they would be arrested.

SwineCast update for April 1, 2010, What are Some Control Options for H1N1?

Last Friday’s USDA Pig Crop Report sent markets sharply higher with audible cheering heard from North Carolina to Nebraska. Economist Steve Meyers noted the report "had brought the series of boring pig crop reports to a screeching halt." You can hear the National Pork Board’s post-report press conference here.

Also some interesting conversations around international markets and imports this past month with one presentation on China’s role in world pork markets from an economic perspective and some likely outcomes from a long-term perspective.

We believe with the most recent crop report indicating sufficient corn supplies for both biofuels and feed use (albeit at higher prices than producers would like to see), the swine industry can look forward from a very dark period in its history. In the combined impacts of high feed prices, dramatically improved production efficiency increasing slaughter numbers and weights, and the novel H1N1 virus misnaming debacle, there are a lot of empty barns and hearts out there. Spring can’t come too soon!

Raw milk is getting has more public exposure due to recent illnesses in Michigan. At the core of the issue is food safety and consumer choice.
