Comments from Truffle Media's Trent Fredenburg: After a recent trip to Chicago, I am reminded once again how great the distance is between consumers and the farm. While the mileage from downtown Chicago to the nearest farm may not be long, the distance in understanding of consumers and food production is continually growing.

We need to establish education as one of our top priorities and work diligently to close this education gap that exists today. So I challenge each of us to do a little more to help consumers better understand our story of producing their food. Take a couple of minutes and share with me some of the steps that you have taken to help educate our consumers. Or just share some of your thoughts on how we, as an agriculture community, can do a better job of educating.

PoultryCast update for April 22, 2010, Evaluating Enzyme Effectiveness - Steps You Can Take

U.S. Poultry will return to Russia after negotiators agreed to provide supplies which had not been treated with a chlorine rinse to reduce Salmonella. The story was covered in the St. Petersburg Times.

It’s interesting to note the article mentions the renewed effort to increase domestic meat production in Russia. “President Dmitry Medvedev signed a new 'food security' doctrine in February, calling for, among other things, 85 percent of all meat consumed in the country to be produced domestically. In January, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Russia would be able to cease all poultry imports by 2015.” There are, of course, many forms of trade restrictions.

As an aside, Elanco Food Solutions may play a key role in resolving the issue. The following is a recent release from the company: "Elanco Food Solutions has introduced a food safety product for poultry processing plants: a carcass rinse to reduce Salmonella… AviBrom is a post-harvest carcass rinse that reduces Salmonella pathogens during processing".

Elanco Food Solutions recently was launched as a business platform of Elanco, a division of Eli Lilly and Company. Elanco Food Solutions will market pre- and post-harvest food-safety products and services to poultry, beef and pork packers and processors.

PoultryCast has been invited to Elanco’s new world headquarters to discuss the Elanco Food Solutions program. That visit scheduled to take place this next month. Stay tuned…

Survey information just released shows new home sales at an ‘all-time’ low. With the slow down in both consumer and commercial building markets, the availability of our preferred pine shavings continues to tighten. Research on river-sand as an alternative where the product is available has yielded positive results in turkey poults. It seems once the birds reach a weight where heat loss is less of a problem, they’re able to thrive for a multitude of reasons.

The Midwest Poultry Federation hosted a world-wide group of attendees at their St Paul, MN convention recently. Conversations from presenters at the meeting will make for valuable programs in upcoming PoultryCast updates, stay tuned.

In our last update we referred you to the Slaughter Bill (U.S. House Bill 1549) as a major fight in the making. Just this week, livestock and poultry health professionals joined forces to share industry issues with Capitol Hill legislators and staffer.

One brief excerpt; Dr. Timothy Cummings, clinical poultry professor for the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine at Mississippi State University, said: "Taking FDA-approved animal drugs off the market would leave farmers and veterinarians with very limited options for preventing and controlling disease in livestock and poultry, which would have serious repercussions for animal health and preventing foodborne disease, with the strong likelihood that there would be no improvement in human health. It’s absolutely vital that any decisions about the care of animals and the safety of our food be based on sound science rather than unsubstantiated concerns."

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available, but this is the most important animal health legislation for some time. A recent CBS news program along the same line has been panned as biased and containing several errors. Be sure your legislator understands what this bill means to you, your birds and the consumer.

An interesting story growing out of biofuels research indicates we may be able to impact ammonia volatilization by feeding a potential waste product, "Char", to birds. Not sure why, but the digestive process seems to activate the charcoal and limit odor. That’s an awfully easy answer to a vexing issue, but thinking in new ways is what research is all about.

The industry show season is quickly approaching as we gear up for the International Poultry Expo and Scientific Symposium in Atlanta. That show is co-located with the American Feed Industry Association International Feed Expo and conference at the World Congress Center. That’s a combination that makes sense and has contributed to attendance.

We’re also hearing of additional interest in grain quality with much of the mid-western corn crop showing signs of mold and the attending toxin issues. If you’re not using binders, it may be a good year to discuss options with your vet/nutrition team.
